Kids

We know finding the right dentist for your kids is an important decision. We pay special attention to both your child’s oral health and their experience at the office.

What is it and when would I need it?

A child’s first dentist appointment is recommended when they get their first tooth.  This can be as early as 6 months old. We will work with your child to make their first experience at our dental office a fun and relaxed one. We take a very unique approach to treating kids. The first visit could be as simple as introducing them to the dental clinic, the tools we use, and the sights and sounds they will experience in a fun way, not unlike a playdate. During their check-up and cleaning, Dr. Lok is constantly chatting with them, singing songs to them or even telling them funny stories to keep their mind occupied and at ease. We also have kid friendly tv programming, goody bags and toy prizes to ensure your child enjoys their dental visit and that they will look forward to their next dental check-up.

What should I expect during and after?

For dental-phobic children or anyone who has a fear of the dentist, Dr. Lok and his team are extremely patient and take a very kid-centric approach to improve dental attitudes. The team is patient in taking the time to find the reasons behind the dental phobia, and work with the patient to conquer their fear. If work is needed on your child, Dr. Lok spends his time to ensure you are fully informed of all your options so you may make the decision that best suits your child’s needs. He encourages patients and parents to ask questions to ensure a comfortable and non-pressure environment when deciding if the treatment is right for them.

A dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted on the top biting surfaces of teeth to prevent tooth decay. Although routine brushing and flossing helps remove food and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth, they cannot always reach into the small nooks and crannies of the back teeth. Sealant material is used to flow into and bond to the natural grooves and pits of the teeth, protecting these vulnerable areas from tooth decay by “sealing out” plaque and food debris leading to healthier and problem-free teeth.

What should I expect during and after?

It’s a quick and painless process that does not require freezing. The tooth is cleaned and dried before placing a conditioner. After a few seconds, we rinse off the conditioner and dry your tooth once again before applying the sealant onto the grooves of your tooth. Your dentist will then use a special blue light to harden the sealant. You can eat and drink right after the procedure is complete.

Dental x-rays are very safe and help us get a better understanding of what’s going on in your child’s mouth. It helps us see into the hidden areas of the mouth that we typically would not see.

Baby teeth problems typically spread faster than adult teeth. This is in part due to baby teeth being softer than adult teeth. Catching these problems early can make a big difference in preventing unnecessary discomfort, expensive costs and provide a more comfortable experience for your child. Even though baby teeth are eventually replaced with adult teeth, losing these teeth too early can lead to complications that have lasting affects into their adulthood.

What should I expect during and after?

Our experienced staff will help you take x-rays right from the dental chair.  We will instruct your child on what to do in kid friendly terms. Sometimes despite best efforts the child’s mouth is just too small to take x-rays. We will assess the situation and advise you on the best approach for your child.  Please feel free to ask them any questions or preferences to make the experience more comfortable.

Fluoride is a natural mineral that builds strong teeth and prevents cavities. Fluoride works by restoring minerals to tooth surfaces where bacteria may have eroded the outer layer of teeth called the enamel. It can also inhibit the growth of harmful oral bacteria which further prevents cavities. Fluoride benefits both children and adults. The earlier children are exposed to fluoride, the less likely they are to develop cavities.

For children, our office provides a paint-on varnish fluoride. This treatment has a higher fluoride concentration than what’s in your diet or toothpaste. It only takes a few seconds to apply and comes in many kid friendly flavours. Afterward the varnish stays on the child’s teeth for the rest of the day until they brush it off at night and it is completely safe to eat and drink while carrying on with their daily routine.
